The proverb comes from the Declara- tion of Independence (1776), in which Thomas Jefferson wrote: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Proverbs expressing similar mean- ing: jack’s as good as his master; all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.
